Many times visitors to the Snyder Estate ask what is the
difference between Natural and Portland cement. The Spring/Summer 2001
issue of Natural News had excerpts from a Consolidated Rosendale Cement
Co. (C.R.C.Co.) booklet printed in 1910 which explained how Natural cement
was made. With this issue we will show how Portland cement was
manufactured during the same time by the Chicago Portland Cement
Co. (C.P.C. Co.) The manufacturing process described by the C.R.C.Co.
for Natural cement and the C.P.C.Co. for Portland cement were typical for
each cement type.
In 1910 the American Natural cement industry was celebrating 92 years
of manufacturing and the American Portland cement industry was
only 39 years old. Ten years earlier, in 1900, Portland cement had
matched the annual output of Natural cement. From 1900 on, Portland
cement production increased each year and natural cement production
decreased.
